Van Persie: 10 teams can win the Champions League this year

Manchester United's Robin Van Persie believes there are up to ten teams that can realistically win the Champions League this season

Manchester United face Olympiakos this week in the last 16 of the Champions League. Europe's premier competition remains The Red Devils last remaining chance to win some silverware this season.

The Premier League has seen United's rivals strengthen and pull ahead of them this season by some way. They have hopes of breaking into the top four but it is looking as if they might have to settle for a Europa League spot at best. However if they manage to win the Champions League this year then they will be back to defend their crown next season regardless of where they finish in the Premier League. Much like when Liverpool won in 2005 but finished 5th and when Chelsea won in 2012 despite finishing 6th.

If the above did happen then United fans will be hoping that Liverpool finish fourth and therefore they take their spot in the Champions League. A dream scenario for what has been a tough season, that has seen their fans go through a spell not witnessed at the club for 20 years.

Star striker Robin Van Persie believes Manchester United can win the Champions League this year, but also feels their are around nine other teams who could realistically win as well. His side have possibly the easiest draw in the last -16 and will be expected to progress to the quarter finals with relative ease. It will get much tougher there however and they could face one of the top three in La Liga, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germian who are all expected to qualify.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Greece, Van Persie said "If you play well and are lucky you have a good chance of going far.

"Even then I think there are eight to 10 teams who could win it this year. Once you get to this stage of the competition you know that there are not going to be any easy matches."

Robin expects United to face Olympiakos amongst a fiery atmosphere in Piraeus. "The atmosphere in the stadium is going to be electric. It's always great to play in a stadium with a good atmosphere, we know the Olympiakos fans are going to be cheering their team on, we also have a good set of travelling fans which will make for a great atmosphere."
