Former Arsenal star has 'bad memories' of cup final

Samir Nasri has offered a painful reflection of the Carling Cup final Arsenal lost in 2011.

The Frenchman was part of the side that famously lost 2-1 to Birmingham and went on a downhill run in all other competitions for the rest of that season.

And Nasri also has fresh memories of a cup final defeat after Manchester City's FA Cup loss to Wigan last season.

The 26-year-old's reflections come ahead of City's Capital One Cup final against Sunderland next weekend, with Nasri worried that defeat could prompt a similar meltdown to the one the Gunners suffered in 2011.

“I don’t have good memories in the cups, because I lost the final with Arsenal as well as last season,” Nasri is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“We got to the final with Arsenal and lost. After that, we won only two games in the league, so a win would be really important for us and for the confidence.”

However, the Frenchman is hopeful the return of Sergio Aguero can give Manuel Pellegrini's side the boost they need ahead of their first final of the season.

The Argentine could make his return from injury after a month on the sidelines and Nasri feels his return will emphasise Man City's strength in depth.

“It’s going to be a big boost for the team to have Aguero back but you cannot disrespect Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko because they did a great job too," the 26-year-old said.

“It’s going to be good when another striker comes back, with them and Stevan Jovetic, so then we can rotate and we can build more pressure up-front.”
