Chelsea need a new striker, and if you believe the numerous reports telling us just that, they will move for Radamel Falcao, Hulk, Edinson Cavani or Diego Costa at the end of the current campaign.
We will find out in due course how true the numerous headlines have been, but the latter has again been making headlines in Spain, with Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo speaking about the striker’s future.
It is not the first time he has done so in recent days, but he went further in quotes published by Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, in which he said the following when asked if Costa would be on the move:
“No, I think Diego Costa is going to be at Atletico next year. Unquestionably do not want any player any currency. This is evident in that we never sell, but the teams are coming for our players.”
Speaking about Costa representing Spain rather than Brazil, Cerezo said, “He likes Spain, he lives here and believes it is better to play for the world champions.”
Costa has now scored 21 goals in just 25 La Liga matches, so it is no surprise that so many of Europe’s top clubs have been linked with him, including Jose Mourinho’s men.
But if his current side can do what many thought was unthinkable at the start of the season, and beat both Barcelona and Real Madrid to the league title, then it would appear even less likely that Costa would leave, even if someone does match his reported £32million release-clause.
After all, if he wants to play international football for the world champions, he is likely to want to play domestic football for the champions of Spain, too.
