A select round-up of morning news relating to Manchester United…
Patrice Evra has told MUTV that Wayne Rooney deserves his bumper new contract.
The Manchester United striker has agreed a new £300,000-a-week deal to remain at Old Trafford well into his thirties, and his teammate said, “He deserved to have a big contract.
“I’m so happy for him because he is working hard, and it’s a good sign for the future of Manchester United, for the fans and for everyone.
“I’m really pleased with Wayne because he deserves it.”
Rooney scored the second goal in United’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, giving them some hope – however slim – of reaching the top four by the end of the season.
Not that former player Gary Neville believes they will make it.
Speaking to Talk Sport, Neville said, “I actually think Manchester United won’t finish fourth this season.
“It will be a massive struggle for them to get into the top four.
“They’re making mistakes in most matches at the moment and unless they go on a ridiculous run and win every match and the teams above them implode, I don’t think they will get in the Champions League.”
And finally, this morning United fans woke to the news that they may be in the box-seat to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.
The Daily Star Sunday reports that the midfielder is likely to leave his current club at the end of the season and United “are confident they have got their man”.
Gundogan would be an outstanding addition to David Moyes’ squad if he can steer clear of the injuries that have blighted his campaign.
