Southampton legend Tweets Bale after wondergoal - 'Would have got in my top 10!'

Matt Le Tissier has been congratulating former Southampton star Gareth Bale for his strike against Elche last night.

Gareth Bale stepped into the void left behind by the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo yesterday by scoring an absolute worldy of a goal against Elche - a win that sees them go clear of Barcelona in La Liga after they lost to Real Sociedad 3-1 in San Sebastian.

Bale’s goal was typical Bale - vintage even. Cutting in onto his left foot, from distance, he hammered a strike toward the Elche goal which almost ripped a hole in the top corner of the net…

Bale is of course now the most expensive football in the world - and is expected to have this sort of effect week-in-week-out for Los Merengues.

But it was humble beginning for Bale - coming through at Southampton in the Championship.

And a former Saints player has been in touch to congratulate him for his performance. Actually that isn’t fair, to call Matt Le Tissier anything less than a legend at Southampton is sacrilege - they do call him ‘Le God’ on the Solent after all.

Le Tiss was himself a scorer of some pretty special goals during his time at what was then The Dell.

But even he had to admit that this goal might have made it into his top ten…

Calm down Le Tiss - it wasn’t that special…
