The majority of United fans seemed to finally be impressed with Fellaini yesterday - apart from his poor miss.
Marouane Fellaini has certainly had it tough since becoming a Manchester United player. He was signed from Everton in a £27.5 million deadline day move - following his former boss David Moyes to Old Trafford in the process.
But it has not been plain sailing ever since.
He has struggled to adapt to the United philosophy - and his distinct lack of technical ability is highlighted among this collection of players and under the scrutiny of red eyes instead of blue.
He has also suffered with injury - a recent wrist complaint keeping him out for over two months.
But given the way United fans were going on, his return to action was not hotly anticipated.
However this weekend was just that, his return, as the Belgian international was handed the start against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
So how did he get on?
Considering he has been out of action for so long, and in comparison to his performances for the Red Devils prior to his injury - surely United fans can have little to complain about.
Here are some of his vital statistics from the game.
|Name||Team||Duel Won||Total Scoring Att||Won Tackle||Interception||Accurate Pass||Aerial Won|
|Marouane Fellaini||Man Utd||9||3||3||4||65||3|
The issue is that despite his relatively solid performance, aptitude in the tackle (100% success rate), and his movement - which certainly saw him support the strikers more than he ever has for his new team - that will not be the moment that sticks in some United fan's memory from this game.
We know Fellaini is strong and bullish and good in the air and can run box-to-box for 90 minutes - but it is his lack of guile and technique that has most United fans consistently criticising him.
And in the first half he gave a glaringly obvious demonstration of that in action.
He faced a relatively easy task of placing the ball into the back of the net with his left foot - but he lacked the aptitude on his weaker limb to curl the ball into the back of the net - unfortunately that is what United fans are set to remember.
He also had a powerful strike in the second half and I would go as far as to say that this was his best performance yet in a Manchester United shirt.
But what did the fans think?
Here are some thoughts from Twitter…

Fellaini the same. Personally, Fellaini added substance to our midfield. Something we've lacked for a long while.— Budge (@TheLastOfBudge) February 23, 2014
