Liverpool are still in the title race, insists Swansea boss

Brendan Rodgers

Swansea head coach Garry Monk believes Liverpool remain contenders in this season's Premier League title race.

Talk beyond Champions League qualification has been forbidden by Brendan Rodgers this season but the Liverpool manager has been tipped to push their Premier League rivals all the way in the title race.

Swansea caretaker Garry Monk sees no reason why his former boss cannot rival the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in the battle for domestic supremacy, following the Welsh club's 4-3 defeat earlier today.

Speaking after the seven-goal thriller at Anfield, the Swans' player-coach hailed his team's resilience in pegging back their hosts and tipped the Reds to vie for English football's top prize.

"We showed the character again that we've got. Two-nil wasn't great and you do start to think 'what can this be?' because they've been destroying teams here this season, especially early on in the first half," he told his post-match press conference.

"But we got that one goal back and you could see the crowd got a bit edgy, then we got the second. Unfortunately they got the third but when we got back after half time, at three-all, I thought that we could do something because confidence was high.

"To come here to a team that's pushing for the title and do that to them, we must be doing something right."

Pressed on whether Liverpool's pursuit of the Premier League crown was realistic, Monk added: "Why not? They're up there and it's not out of their grasp. I'm sure they'll be thinking of that themselves.

"The three points today keeps them up with it so why not? That's the thought you have to have."
