The gossip columns may currently be full of reports linking Ilkay Gundogan with a summer switch to Manchester United, but in recent weeks it is Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos who has been heavily tipped for a transfer to Old Trafford.
After David Moyes was pictured sitting with Kroos’s agent at a recent Bundesliga match, and with Kroos reportedly seeking considerably improved terms if he were to remain at the Allianz Arena, the 24-year-old German international was said to be high on the United boss’s wanted list.
And now Bayern’s sporting director has answered questions on Kroos’s future.
In an interview with German newspaper Bild, Sammer was asked the latest on the player’s contract negotiations, to which he replied, “Toni is very appreciated by us. We have repeatedly emphasised (this).”
When asked if Kroos was gambling by reportedly seeking a much better deal, Sammer said, “We are in conversations which are built on trust, therefore I will not answer your question.”
But he was more forthcoming when asked if Kroos would be a Bayern player next year.
“Toni has a contract until the summer of 2015,” he replied. “Until then, nothing will change. And we are eager to make it beyond playing for Bayern.”
So it appears – at least if Sammer is to be believed – that Kroos will not be leaving at the end of the current campaign.
Although if he does not put pen to paper on a new deal, the prospect of losing him on a free transfer could prove too much of a risk to take.
