'Well done Gunners' - Absent Ozil's Facebook joy at Arsenal thrashing

Mesut Ozil might have a thigh injury - but that couldn't keep him away from The Emirates this afternoon.

Arsenal were at their sublime best today - as they swept aside Sunderland in a stunning 4-1 victory at The Emirates Stadium.

And they did so without Mesut Ozil.

Much of the attention before the game revolved around the absence of the club record signing from the matchday squad.

He was reportedly given the day off on Friday and told his services were not needed - as he was given an overdue rest after playing four games in 11 days.

His form has recently dipped severely - culminating in poor performances against Liverpool and Bayern Munich - so it would not have been a surprise if Wenger had decided to give him the weekend off.

That however does not seem to be the case, at least according to Wenger.

He says Ozil was out with a thigh problem:

“Yes [he was injured], a thigh problem but it was a kick. He should also be available next week. He is in the dressing room at the moment.”

The fact is Arsenal did play better without him on this occasion - and injury or no injury some time off might just be the tonic for this undoubtedly superb talent.

But despite not being available for action Ozil just could not stay away from the stadium.

He was in attendance and watched on as the likes of Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere put in excellent performances to thrash The Black Cats.

And he shared his joy at the result on his official Facebook page after the game - letting every Arsenal fan know he hasn’t lost any of the passion he clearly has for his new club.

‘Well done, Gunners! #AFCvSAFC #coyg

He just needs a break - and next weekend he should strike a rejuvenated character...
