According to the Spanish paper Diario Sport, Liverpool have opened negotiations with the Barcelona goalkeeper who is set to leave this summer.
It has been reported in the past that AS Monaco appear to be the likely destination for the Spanish international, but despite being able to talk to other clubs as a result of his expiring contract, it appears no deal has yet been struck with the French side.
Liverpool already have three goalkeepers still on the books in Simon Mignolet, Brad Jones and on-loan Napoli shot-stopper Pepe Reina. However, Reina's future remains in some doubt.
It is reported by Diario Sport that Liverpool sent chief scout Julian Ward to watch Barcelona’s La Liga clash away at Real Sociedad this afternoon, and will try to persuade the Catalan to join with a financially rewarding signing-on bonus.
The reported interest leaves much to be questioned regarding current number one Simon Mignolet.
The Belgian international only joined the Reds in a £9million deal last July, and he has impressed overall with his performances to date.
The Reds currently lie fourth in the Premier League table, four points off leaders Chelsea with just 12 games remaining. Despite Tottenham Hotspur being just three points behind in fifth, the Merseyside club look more likely to land a Champions League spot come the end of the season.
Perhaps this is their leading motive to go after Valdes. Simon Mignolet despite his solid debut season lacks Champions League experience and the Liverpool staff may feel an older, wiser shot-stopper will help them adapt to the next level.
While Valdes’s future destination remains unclear, what is certain is that it lies away from his hometown club Barcelona. His next step will now be decided by the best possible offer on a sporting and economic level – leaving Liverpool an attractive proposition.
Would Victor Valdes be a good signing for Liverpool?
