Liverpool morning news: Shock defender move reported; Rodgers wants new Johnson deal

A select round-up of morning news relating to Liverpool

The Daily Mail reports that Manchester City are considering a move for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel if the Reds fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

City have regularly been linked with a summer move for a new centre-back, and those rumours have only intensified following last week’s Champions League tie against Barcelona and the spotlight firmly on Martin Demichelis.

The report claims that while Skrtel is happy at Liverpool, he wants to play Champions League football. Although considering how well his side have played this season, that is unlikely to be a problem.

In other news, the Liverpool Echo reports that Brendan Rodgers wants Glen Johnson to remain at Anfield.

The right-back will enter the final year of his current deal this summer, but Rodgers is hopeful he will remain.

Glen is a player we want to keep,” Rodgers said.

In terms of his contract, I am sure that is something that will be discussed between now and the end of the season.

“I think Steven Gerrard went down to the last year of his contract before that was sorted.”
