Manchester United have been linked with a lot of players since David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson last summer. But since the double-debacle that was the failed pursuits of Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara, one player has been more heavily tipped for a move to United than any other.
And no, we are not talking about Ezequiel Garay; we mean, William Carvalho.
Considering that Moyes’ staff have scouted the Sporting Lisbon midfielder a reported 12 times to date, it would come as a considerable surprise if he does not make a move for the 21-year-old in the summer.
But the player with a release-clause of €45million may be about to receive some welcome news from his current club, that could come as quite a blow to United.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports that William is set to be offered a pay-rise at the end of the current campaign.
The report claims the player is set to receive a wage “more in line with the performances he has showed in recent times”, which means he could be in for quite a hearty increase.
William has been outstanding this season and is exactly the kind of defensive midfielder Moyes is crying out for.
The player currently has a contract that runs until 2018, so only a club meeting his release-clause is likely to force Sporting to do business in the next few years.
But it is smart on their part if the reports are true and they plan to renegotiate his wage. A Bola claims William currently earns a standard monthly wage of just €4,000 before add-ons.
If a new deal is agreed this summer, you wonder if his clause may also be increased, given the reported interest not just from United but from other clubs across Europe.
