Spanish paper: Ozil left Arsenal with nine men

Mesut Ozil's performance for Arsenal against Bayern has been harshly critiqued in the country where he used to ply his trade.

In Spain, Mesut Ozil's progress is followed with great interest although he has departed.

Real Madrid came under huge criticism when they let him go late in the summer, and so to see him fail at Arsenal would prove the La Liga giants right in their decision.

The reason Carlo Ancelotti permitted the German to depart was because he wanted a player who tracked up and down the pitch more, preferring Angel di Maria's verstatility even if he is not as productive in attack.

Yet now at Arsenal, Ozil's usually clockwork assists have dried up, with just one in the last 10 matches. The word crisis is over-used, but the record signing in North London must feel like he is in his own personal one.

So back to Spain, where Ozil's performance was castigated by one newspaper, El Confidencial, who wrote that he left his side playing with nine men, with Wojciech Szczesny sent off before half-time.

"Guardiola's Bayern made to sweat as Ozil left Arsenal with nine.

"Bayern finished dancing to Arsenal that played a man down for the expulsion of Szczesny although it would be more correct to say that ended a couple of men and less Özil is plunged into a world of shadows.

"The second of the night finished off the match, although not the tie does not put everything in favour of Bayern who in London again demonstrated why they capture so many compliments. Yes, Guardiola suffered more than expected against a team depleted by expulsions and disconnection of Özil."

The paper assessed that Arsenal certainly made Bayern work for their win, particularly via their first half performance, but Ozil's performance made for the big story of the night.

The player will know from all of the attention upon him that his reputation is on the line, and even the country he left behind in Spain are well up to speed on his current troubles.

The playmaker has all the tools and motivation to put things right now, but if he is played at the weekend and gives a similar no-show, then it could be his manager who enters the spotlight for failing to give him a rest.
