We get you up to speed on who these ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ are and treat you to a trailer too!
Guardians of the Galaxy… ‘Who!?’ you may say? ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY!’, I will proclaim! So, yeah not everyone knows who this rag-tag bunch of intergalactic criminals are but if you've read the Marvel comics of the same name then you’ll no-doubt be as excited as I am about the movie.
Many believe, as do I, that this is by far the biggest punt in terms of Marvel movies linked to the current universe they’ve built. The characters/comics aren’t as well known amongst the mainstream, as say, Iron Man or Spider-Man are, so when I first heard they were actually making the movie I was definitely wondering what Marvel was planning on doing with the IP.
The movie is set to tie-in with the Avengers: Age of Ultron, due out next year, and sees Peter Quill (or Star-Lord, as he prefers to be called) get in to a spot of bother after he steals an orb yearned for by the villainous Ronan. Quill finds himself teaming up with a group of misfits made up of Gamora, Rocket, Drax the Destroyer, and Groot, and must rally his new-found ‘friends’ into helping him save the galaxy once he discovers the true power of the orb.
Here's a quick run-down of who the Guardians of the Galaxy are;
Peter Quill (Star-Lord): A human taken from Earth as a child… and I could go on here, but I prefer Chris Pratt’s description of his character at Comic-Con last year, he said, “He had a hard time as a kid, and now he goes around space, making out with hot alien girls and just being a rogue and a bit of a jerk, and through teaming up with these guys, finds a higher purpose for himself.” Perfect.
Groot: A tree-like humanoid, and partner-in-crime to Rocket. "All the Guardians start out the movie as bastards – except Groot. He's an innocent. He's a hundred percent deadly and a hundred percent sweet. He's caught up in Rocket's life, really", said Director James Gunn.
Drax: A warriorin search of vengeance against Ronan after his family is killed. Drax is a one man army and will stop at nothing to get his revenge on Ronan, who he blames for the death of his family.
Gamora: The adopted daughter of Thanos, who tries to forge a new path for herself. Thanos, you know the guy who gave Loki his army in Avengers? Yeah, that purple guy at the end of the credits!
Regardless of movie tie-ins, I think (and greatly hope) that Guardians of the Galaxy will stand on it’s own two feet as a solid addition to the Marvel movie universe. You can check out the trailer below, which does I nice job of introducing you to the characters, as well as getting a few laughs.
Guardians of the Galaxy is set for release on 1st August 2014.
