Arsenal and Bayern both claim unwanted CL records – how?

Arsenal and Bayern Munich’s penalty misses had statistical implications.

The much-anticipated clash at the Emirates proved to be a cracker, with the first 15 minutes of the game as good as any fan is likely to witness this season.

It was fast, frantic, and full of action as both sides poured forward when they had the chance.

Arsenal looked every bit as good as Bayern Munich for the first 15 minutes of the game, and were duly awarded a penalty when Jerome Boeteng stopped Mesut Ozil in his tracks inside the penalty area.

Arsenal’s German international playmaker has suffered a bit of a confidence crisis in recent weeks – failing to have any real impact on the Gunners’ recent games. This was his chance to make his mark, however his penalty lacked confidence and conviction as Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer easily palmed it away.

According to statisticians Opta, Mesut Ozil’s penalty miss not only affected his team but landed the German with the record of being the only player to miss two penalties in this year’s competition:

Worryingly for Arsene Wenger, Mesut Ozil looked shot after his poor penalty, and it may take something truly special to pull him out of his current slump.

Bayern Munich reacted with a flurry of attacks, and a sublime Toni Kroos pass was brought down by Arjen Robben in the box, only to be hauled to the ground by Arsenal’s shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny. Penalty to Bayern, a red card for the Polish number one – what could have gone worse?

The Gunners however were given a lifeline as David Alaba’s sweet penalty struck the base of the post and away to safety – resulting in yet another unwanted record – this time for the Germans. Since 2010, Bayern Munich have missed more Champions League penalties than anyone else.

Largely in thanks to Mesut Ozil, can you guess who has missed the second most amount of penalties? Unfortunately for the Gunners, it was a night to forget.
