Liverpool were one of many teams said to be interested in the services of talented 16-year-old forward Donis Avdijaj of Schalke 04 over the past 12 months.
The ‘wunderkind’ had been in great form for the Schalke youth team leading up to their interest in March of last year - scoring 32 goals in 17 appearances.
It was this form that had the likes of Liverpool and Juventus snooping around his potential services - snooping which received this response from the typically shrill Schalke general manager Horst Heldt:
"We are not interested in discussing his departure."
In December last year those rumours surfaced again - so as little as two months ago Liverpool were still said to be keen on the now 17-year-old super starlet.
He had gone on to score 54 goals and create 16 assists in 45 games in all competitions for Schalke II and their youth team - Lionel Messi-like figures for one so young.
He is again in fine form this season - banging in the goals for the under-18’s and Liverpool would be right to revisit their interest in the Osnabruck born forward.
However - it would no longer be a cheap deal.
According to Bild, Schalke have already set the preliminary details for his professional contract in Gelsenkirchen - which will become official when he turns 18 in August.
However Bild believe the deal is already sealed in secret and will keep him at the club until 2019.
But here comes the truly astonishing part - his release clause.
Despite him being yet to play a single minute of Bundesliga football the hierarchy at the Veltins Arena are so impressed by their talent that they want to warn off potential suitors with a big release clause - said to be in the region of €50 million!
That is more than the current €45.5 million it would take to prise German international and Arsenal target Julian Draxler from the club!
Time will tell if he lives up to that billing.
