Everton are preparing for their trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend, and manager Roberto Martinez is looking for his side to turn good away performances into points this weekend. The Toffees were impressive against Spurs but were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline, and Martinez knows his side can't afford to drop more points from good performances.
“I do feel that we’ve performed really, really well away from home. I don’t think it’s been a case of not being confident away from home, and not being able to be ourselves. I think we have done that," said Martinez.
“The only thing I would say is that when you play well away from home, you need to get full points. It’s no good to go away from home, play well and maybe drop two points, or even — as happened at White Hart Lane — play well and lose.
“I think that’s the big difference. If there’s one area we want to improve, it’s making sure we win when we play well. There are no excuses."
Martinez's coaching options have been boosted by a familiar face - Duncan Ferguson. The Goodison Park cult hero will join the first-team coaching staff having worked with the Under-18's at Everton, and Martinez is excited about the prospect of the former centre forward working with the senior side.
“He's developing into a really exciting coach,” said Martinez. “He has been working with first-team on part-time basis and we need his influence in first-team environment.
“He is an Evertonian and an out-and-out influence internally and will be a big part of the staff in the first-team between now and the end of the season," added the Spaniard.
Meanwhile, the Toffees could be looking to the future, with Sevilla defender Federico Fazio a rumoured target for Martinez's side. Sylvain Distin is now 36 and could be replaced in the near future, as Fazio - ten years younger than the Frenchman - is being linked with a move from the cash-strapped La Liga. A big, physically imposing defender with international caps for Argentina, Fazio could be the ideal replacement for the ageing Distin.
