Lamela was signed to be a big-money replacement for Gareth Bale in the summer having starred for the Serie A side, and completed a £30m switch to White Hart Lane one Bale moved to Real Madrid for a world-record £86m fee.
But it's been a terrible season for the Argentine international, failing to break into the first-team in North London having struggled to adjust to the Premier League. There were even suggestions that Lamela could move back to Italy in a loan move to Inter Milan, but Spurs boss Tim Sherwood wasn't prepared to let the winger leave.
This week, Napoli have also been suggested as a possible destination for Lamela, but president Aurelio De Laurentiis poured cold water on that rumour immediately.
However, Lamela is currently in Rome receiving treatment for a back injury, and unsurprisingly there were Roma fans asking the former River Plate star about a possible return to the Stadio Olimpico – and his answer was surprisingly coy.
"But why do not you come back with us?", asked one Roma fan, to which Lamela responded with a smile, saying; "Who knows, let's see," before saying goodbye and leaving in a car.
Spurs may look to cut their losses in the summer, and Roma would certainly be something of a sensible destination for Lamela, who was adored by the Giallorossi faithful during his time with the club.
But many players struggle to make an impact in their debut season in the Premier League, as it takes some time to adjust to the physicality of English football, and with time, Lamela could still be the star that Spurs fans thought he would be.
