On this day: Bayern outclass Arsenal, Courtois sets 2015 target and Anderson happy to stay

Arsenal Defend Bayern Corner

On the 19th February 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 19th February 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 19th February 2013…

Bayern Blessed

It was exactly a year ago today that Arsenal were outclassed by Bayern Munich at The Emirates in a 3-1 defeat.

Toni Kroos got the ball rolling with a clever volley before Thomas Muller made it 2-0. Lukas Podolski bagged a goal for hope before Mario Mandzukic left North London subdued with a third and seemingly final nail in the coffin.

They went on to turn their year around after this performance - beating Bayern 2-0 in the Allianz in the process.

A year later and Arsenal take on Bayern at home again - hoping the massive improvements they have made in the past 12 months’ pay off.

Courting Cech

Thibaut Courtois was speaking about his speculated future at Chelsea. The Belgian number one stopper has been a sensation at Atletico Madrid since joining on loan - but still sees Petr Cech commanding the goalmouth at Stamford Bridge.

But according to the giant stopper that would all change by 2015:

“Cech is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and I think I am an up and coming young talent with the quality maybe also to play for Chelsea. They will continue with Cech for two more years, I believe. The problem is I think that Chelsea didn’t expect me to be at this level this soon. I’ve developed really quickly. It’s a very good situation for Chelsea.”

Sunny Anderson

Anderson was speaking about his time at Manchester United. The £20 million midfielder had been struggling with injuries but refuted claims he was unhappy and wanting to leave the club:

"It's not true. Everyone knows I'm happy at the club. I've had a lot of injuries but I've never let the smile go from my face. I try to help the team all the time. This is me. When I want to leave I will have to talk to the boss first…The only places you could go to from here are Real Madrid and Barcelona. You can't have another choice.”

A year later and he is on loan at Fiorentina, with a view to a permanent deal, after failing to make further an impression in the past 12 months.
