Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna at the end of the season.
The theory is hard to understand considering the experience of Glen Johnson and the potential of Jon Flanagan but should the opportunity come about, Brendan Rodgers would be naïve to ignore it.
Sagna has been one of the most consistent full backs this season, a constant in an impressive Arsenal defence which has maintained a position near the top of the table since the start of the season.
However, would it be a good idea for Rodgers to pursue or one that the club’s owners would be willing to invest in?
The reason Sagna has turned down three contract offers to stay at Arsenal so far seems to be because he wants a long term commitment with the Gunners only prepared to offer a shorter deal.
The Frenchman wants three-years and Arsenal are only prepared to offer two so it would be an amazing decision if Rodgers urged the Anfield club to tie Sagna down on a long term deal as a free agent.
The more likely scenario would see Liverpool offering Sagna potentially a one-year rolling contract, which would provide the Frenchman with even less security than is currently being placed on the table by Arsenal.
The current Liverpool ethos is based around younger players and stars who will turn out to be good investments over several years.
In the same way that Flanagan has emerged as a long term replacement for Glen Johnson, planning could well have already started further down the youth ranks over who could progress into the under-18s and under-21s to eventually replace Flanagan. Not even taking into account Andre Wisdom.
That’s the sort of club Rodgers is creating and it’s a very respectable and similar model to that being used at Borussia Dortmund.
Using comments on our own site and Tweets from fans, we’ve looked at Liverpool responses to the rumours.
"disgustedred - We need a right back that can run up and down the pitch for 90mins and not run out of steam, the only way Rodgers would get him is on a free and reduced wages to sit on the bench"
"HazeyMatt - being from arsenal with their wage structure i dont think his wage would be too high. Overall i think we'd be better off sticking with Wisdom and Flanno"
"zico59 - Like he'd leave Arsenal to go to liverpool....WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN SMOKING UP THERE?"
"5_European_Cups - Arsenal are a stepping stone and selling club. Not like he's going to win any trophies at Arsenal. What 8 years and counting? Liverpool has won a Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup since Arse last won a trophy"
Would love Sagna for Liverpool.— Kinan (@pkinanthii) February 19, 2014

Sagna linked with Liverpool lol, some Liverpool fans actually believe Johnson and Flanagan are better than him lol I'm done— Nic (@nicolaskues_) February 19, 2014
Liverpool in for Sagna apparently! Hope not, why don't we get Montoya instead or even Micah Richards who can play centre back as well!— Football opinions (@TheLiverBird96) February 18, 2014
