Demichelis fall-out continues: Spanish press ask why City signed him in the first place

The signing of Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis has been questioned in Spain.

Martin Demichelis is a name Manchester City fans may not want to hear this morning, after his red card against Barcelona and the subsequent 2-0 defeat left them with a mountain to climb in the second-leg.

But the fall-out from the Argentine’s recent performances continues, with Spanish newspaper El Confidencial questioning the player’s signing in the first place.

The report claims director of football Txiki Begiristain was searching long and hard for a centre-back of sufficient quality to match City’s attacking options. That comes as no surprise given the numerous reports last summer linking the Blues with Real Madrid’s Pepe.

Claiming it was impossible to sign the Portuguese international, the story adds, “In a lightening operation, almost hastily, Txiki granted the request of Pellegrini and surprisingly hired Demichelis.”

The report also considers the difference in City’s squad when comparing the forward players with those who make up their defence, claiming the former is considerably weaker and highlighting Lionel Messi’s foul and subsequent goal as a reason for that.

With the likes of Eliaquim Mangala heavily linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium, it could be that Manuel Pellegrini soon has a new centre-back to form a lasting and effective partnership alongside Vincent Kompany.

But for now, the performance of Demichelis has made headlines much further afield than just England.
