Dutch wonderkid Davy Klaassen is on the verge of a new deal at Ajax according to Dutch news reports.
Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has reported that Ajax are closing in on a new deal for 20-year-old sensation Davy Klaassen which will keep him at the Dutch club until 2018.
The stories would have prompted great memories of another former Ajax star, Dennis Bergkamp, moving to Arsenal after a spell at Inter Milan and it’s no coincidence that Klaassen’s development has partially been overseen by the Arsenal legend himself.
However, the youngster, who has bagged eight goals and one assist in 16 appearances this season, looks set to commit his future to Ajax, resisting the urge to move to a higher profile and more financially lucrative Premier League.
“Davy Klaassen and Ajax nearing an agreement on a new contract. Once the dot is put on the i and the agreements on paper, the midfielder will sign a new contract until the summer of 2018,” reads the report on De Telegraaf’s website.
“I'm enjoying myself and do not go away for the time being,” added the youngster himself.
It shouldn’t be taken as anything more than a slight blow for Arsenal because it’s a decision which seems to be based on nothing more than loyalty and passion for the club which has given him his chance in professional football.
It’s certainly not down to Arsenal’s infrastructure and they certainly aren’t short of attacking midfielders who play in his position. They have scouted him before and will more than likely continue to do so.
The Gunners’ financial strength means that if they want to re-approach the possibility of signing Klaassen in one year or even two, they will be in a good position to pay what would be a big fee and a big personal package.
It’s a blow, but it’s not the end of the world.
