€40m United, Liverpool and Chelsea target "in advanced contract talks"

Ivan Rakitic

Sevilla are believed to be close to extending Ivan Rakitic’s current deal, which would put a potential Premier League move on hold.

Despite selling the likes of Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas in the summer, Sevilla have had a solid season this term.

One of their star men has been gaining plaudits in Spain, and has become a reported target for a number of Premier League sides as a result.

Ivan Rakitic has scored ten goals and laid on eight assists this season, with the talented Croatian playmaker catching the eye with some excellent showings.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all believed to have weighed up options for the 25-year-old, who has a €40 million release clause in his current contract.

However, Sevilla president Jose Castro has revealed that the attacking midfielder is on the verge of penning a new deal with the Spanish side.

“Yes, we’re in advanced talks with Rakitic,” the chief told El Desmarque.

“We’ve had two meetings and I believe that we’ve reached a cordial agreement. I don’t believe there will be any problems in signing a new contract in the next several days.

“It’s an important operations, perhaps the most important the club can aspire to at this time.

“The principal agreement is clear and there shouldn’t be any problem announcing the renewal in the next several days. I cannot reveal the details as we’re still in negotiations.”

Sevilla are known as a side that are willing to part company with their best players for an agreeable price, so a new contract for Rakitic may well just be a way of strengthening their bargaining position.

However, with the player thought to be willing to extend, the Premier League big boys may have to look elsewhere this summer.
