Enzo Perez may not be a name familiar with many fans outside of Portugal and Argentina, but the 27-year-old central midfielder has been outstanding for Benfica this season, and has stepped up since his former teammate Nemanja Matic returned to Chelsea.
Perez was fantastic in the vital 2-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon, scoring the second goal and bossing the game from the middle of the park. And while many Benfica fans may have feared the effect of losing the influential Matic halfway through the season, the Argentine’s performance went a long way to allaying those fears.
Now Portuguese newspaper A Bola is reporting that Perez has agreed a new deal that will see him remain at Benfica until at least 2018.
The player already had a deal until 2016, but the report claims that has now been extended with his yearly wage more than doubling in the process.
So while Matic was sold somewhat cheaply by the current Primeira Liga leaders, it appears they have secured the long-term future of a man who could just become even more influential in the Serbian player’s absence.
