Club record signing Juan Mata believes United can still make fourth place in the Premier League this term, despite being in 7th place presently 11 point behind Liverpool.

“The objective is to get to the Champions League spots. It’s difficult because Liverpool are doing well, so are Arsenal, as well as Tottenham and Everton, who are all clubs also fighting for them, but I think we have a team who can do it,” explained the Spaniard.

“Unfortunately this year, things haven’t gone so well in the league, but I believe there is still time this season. With the mentality and the staff that we have, I believe we can climb up the table and win as many games as possible.”

In team news, Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been ‘excluded’ from the list of ‘potential’ captains to replace Nemanja Vidic who has stated he will leave at the end of the season.

The Dutch ace was ‘omitted’ from the list on the club’s official website of candidates to replace the imminently departing skipper which included David De Gea, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones, Darren Fletcher, and Wayne Rooney.

Reports in Manchester today suggest Borussia Dortmund could be ‘keen’ on a swap deal for Ilkay Gundogan and Shinji Kagawa.

The M.E.N also suggests United could ‘hijack’ Manchester City’s pursuit of Eliaquim Mangala with Chelsea also linked this week with interest in the Porto defender.
