Manchester City latest: Early team news and an unlikely supporter

Etihad Stadium

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…

There really is only one place to start (and probably finish) today, and that is the imminent match between Manchester City and Barcelona in the last-16 of the Champions League.

The Spanish champions are currently top of La Liga on goal difference, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid also having 60 points and competing in the closest title race in Europe. But for now Barca will have just one thing on their minds, and that is coming away from the Etihad with a victory - something that few have managed this season.

In early team news, Fernandinho is set to return from injury for the Blues, although Sergio Augero is not yet fit for a comeback.

Despite that, one man in particular believes City have a big chance of beating the Spanish giants – Jose Mourinho.

In quotes published in the Mirror, the Chelsea boss said, “Of course they have Messi, he is special, and they have more than him.

“But I think this is the worst Barcelona of many, many years, so City have a chance.”

More mind games or simply a statement of fact? Who knows, but Manuel Pellegrini will know his side has a chance, if they play to their full potential.

And finally, in preparation for the game the Manchester Evening News has published a special piece looking at the numbers behind tonight’s match.

Perhaps the most interesting stat from those gathered is that the combined revenue of the two clubs in the Deloitte Money League is a staggering €768,600,000.
