Ron-Robert Zieler is a goalkeeper who has been linked on and off with Liverpool over the past 12 months.
In goal Liverpool's number one is currently Simon Mignolet, while Pepe Reina is on loan at Napoli and not expected to play for the club again.
It meant the often unconvincing Brad Jones was called upon as a deputy in the FA Cup at the weekend, and failed to shine.
If Liverpool do want to pursue their interest in Zieler, they have two months to get him on cheap, according to reports in Germany.
Kicker write that the goalkeeper has a €6 million release clause in his contract, which expires at the end of April.
"Until 30 April, so he has a clause, Zieler can go for fixed six million euros, after that would be a transfer to negotiation and would especially need an agreement of Hannover 96."
Zieler, 25, spent time as a teenager in Manchester United's youth ranks - but left to return to his homeland in Germany after seeing the path to first team blocked.
Kicker reported that AS Monaco are showing an interest, as an alternative to their interest in Victor Valdes.
From Liverpool's perspective, Zieler would be an instant upgrade on Brad Jones - and his fee would be covered by any impending sale of Spanish stopper Pepe Reina in the summer.
Whether the German would settle for being back-up to Mignolet is another matter, but if he is told he can compete for the spot with the Belgian it could drive on the standards of both stoppers. Even this season at times Mignolet has look hesitant and shown he is not quite the finished article.
With Liverpool pushing for Champions League football, they are likely to need greater strength in depth at every position next season. Signing Zieler for a knock down price would be an excellent move, if they can convince him and Brendan Rodgers feels he would be able to keep both goalkeepers happy.
