Everton latest: Baines and Distin talk up chances, Oviedo shock

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Goodison Park...

Everton's FA Cup tie with Arsenal has been moved forward to a 12:45pm kick off on Saturday, March 8th, and left back Leighton Baines isn't concerned at the prospect of facing the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium. The two sides have faced off once in North London already this season, where a late Gerard Deulofeu strike earned Roberto Martinez's side a 1-1 draw, but Baines believes his side can go and win to book a place in the semi-finals.

“You don't look to avoid anyone in the cup," said the England left-back. "If you're going to win a trophy, eventually you're going to have to beat some big teams along the way.

"It's very important to all of us and you could see that against Swansea on Sunday. We know we're capable of winning games on our day and we're looking forward to the next round."

Whilst Baines has been turning his attention to the FA Cup, centre back Sylvain Distin still believes that the Toffees are still in a good position to finish in the top four. Martinez's side sit in 6th place, eight points behind local rivals Liverpool but with one game in hand. The recent 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham served as a big blow to their hopes of Champions League qualification, but former Manchester City and Portsmouth centre back Distin still thinks they have a shot of breaking into the top four.

“We’re still in a really good position and we’re doing very well,” said Distin. “I know we had a setback recently but we’re still in the race to finish in the top four and we’re in the cup, so it’s an exciting season so far.”

There has been some surprising news on Merseyside today, as left back Bryan Oviedo has shockingly been filmed on an exercise bike just three weeks after suffering a double leg fracture against Stevenage. The Costa Rican is now hoping to speed up his recovery in a valiant attempt to make it to the World Cup, where he would be in line to face off against team mates Ross Barkley and the aforementioned Baines, with Costa Rica taking on England on June 24th.
