Confirmed: Liverpool and Arsenal 'wonderkid' target signs extension until 2019

Chelsea and Manchester United were also said to be keen on a move for Saul Niguez of Atletico Madrid.

Young Spanish midfielders are all the rage at the moment - and one starlet, dubbed a wonderkid by many, is catching the eye of several Premier League sides.

It was first reported that Arsenal and Chelsea were ready for a head-to-head battle for the services of Saul Niguez in the summer - whilst Manchester United were also said to be keen.

But it then emerged that Liverpool were the favourites to sign him after scouts reportedly watched him in action.

Niguez is currently on loan at Rayo Vallecano - and has been in top form for the club this campaign.

But with competition fierce and expected to get even more difficult over time at the Vicente Calderon, there were rumours Los Colchoneros might just do business at the right price.

Earlier this week however it was rumoured that he was on the verge of signing a new deal at the capital club - which would keep him at the club until 2018 and include a whopping release clause of €24 million.

Now his extension has been confirmed by the club.

Atletico have announced on Twitter and their official website that Niguez has signed a new deal at the club - keeping him a Rojiblanco until 2019.

Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Caminero stated of the new deal for the wonderkid:

"Saul is a player with great projection, international in all categories of the selection. We are very hopeful and we believe he should continue to gain experience in the First Division. Decisively staked him. That's why we have renewed and want to continue here for many years."

So Niguez is going nowhere - meaning the queue of English admirers will have to look elsewhere for a talented midfielder to enhance their current options.
