As a preview to tonight's Champions League tie, who would make a combined XI from tonight's sides?
Tuesday night sees the number one team in France travel to Germany to take on the second best team in the Bundesliga as Bayer Leverkusen welcome Paris Saint-Germain into the BayArena. The French Champions start as favourites to advance over the two legs, but they won’t have it easy against the German side. They may be 16 points off Bayern Munich at the top, but they have only conceded 22 goals in 21 league matches this season.
Here is combined XI for the two teams facing off for a place in the Quarter-Finals
GK Salvatore Sirigu
The Italian goalkeeper has been superb since his move to France. One of PSG’s unsung heroes, always reliable as their last line of defence.
Even at 33, this full-back is enjoying one of the best of his career, leading to talks about a possible recall for this summer’s World Cup.
CB Thiago Silva
Easily one of the best centre-backs in football, if not the best. A huge commanding presence in the PSG back-line, their club captain and defensive inspiration.
CB Omer Toprak
The young Turkish defender is enjoying an excellent season, one of the reasons behind Leverkusen’s great defensive record, pips both Alex and Emir Spahic into this team.
RB Gregory van der Wiel
Has been superb in the Champions League this year, winning his place back in the Dutch national team and has provided four assists in this competition already.
CM Thiago Motta
One of PSG’s most important players, he controls and runs the game from the heart of the midfield. When he is playing well, PSG are near impossible to beat.
CM Gonzalo Castro
Amazingly versatile and fantastically creative, he leads Leverkusen with eight assists in the league. Gets in ahead of Verratti due to his consistency and eye for a pass.
CM Blaise Matuidi
PSG’s beating heart. If every player gave as much as Matudi every game then PSG would be unstoppable. Drives this team forward at every opportunity.
LW Sidney Sam
This 26-year-old has seven goals and seven assists in the league, with every game the £2.5 million that Schalke have spent on this winger looks like the bargain of the century. Extremely quick and equally as talented.
RW Heung-Min Son
The Korean winger makes the team, not just because of the injury to Edinson Cavani, but because he has been superb since his move from Hamburg. His eight goals this term have played a huge part in Leverkusen sitting second.
CF Zlatan Ibrahimovic
19 league goals, seven Champions League goals, it would take an awful lot for Stefan Kiessling to dethrone Ibrahimovic from any combined XI. PSG’s amazing talisman.
