Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly interested in Real Madrid winger Jese, but not for his £30million price-tag; yet now he is proving to be worth that.
In the summer of 2012, Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly interested in Real Madrid winger Jese Rodriguez.
That was no surprise, given his age and the fact that the North London side had reportedly made an initial bid of just £5million. To suddenly up that by £25million – that is not really Daniel Levy’s way.
Jese is now 20, and is a regular fixture in the Real starting line-up. It has been a gradual progression, with much of this campaign spent on the bench and making do with cameo appearances, but Jese has started the last three La Liga matches, and he has scored in all of them.
Goals against Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal and Getafe have added to earlier goal-scoring interventions (both from the bench) against Valencia and Barcelona, and now the Spanish media cannot get enough of the precocious winger.
When you add the fact that Jese has also scored three times in the Copa del Rey since Christmas, it is clear the £30million Real were reportedly asking for all that time ago may have been spot-on.
In quotes published by Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, Jesse said, “It may be that I am in the best moment of my career, but I am not satisfied. I want more.”
That is ominous for Real’s rivals, who will already be looking enviously at Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale and wondering just how many devastating wingers Carlo Ancelotti can call on.
At just 20, Jese still has lots to learn. But it appears Real just cannot ignore his talent any longer. If only Spurs had taken the plunge. After all, they were willing to pay £30million for Erik Lamela.
