Predicted Manchester City XI to play Barcelona - Four changes from Chelsea win

Manchester City Etihad

Match to be played on Tuesday February 17 2014 at 19:45 GMT. Venue: Etihad Stadium, Manchester.

Manchester City face a huge Champions League tie this week when they entertain Spanish champions Barcelona.

The Nou Camp team are European specialists and have plenty of players who can hurt City, putting this tie to rest before the match even gets back to Spain for the second 90 minutes.

Manuel Pellegrini will be confident because his team go into the game off the back of a good result against Chelsea and he has experience against Barca from his days in La Liga.

Here’s the side he could go with for the match.

GK – Joe Hart

Hart should return in goal after being rested for the FA Cup game against Chelsea. He’s a good shot stopper for City to have in high pressure situations.

RB – Pablo Zabaleta

Zabaleta will be a crucial player for City in terms of getting forward on the right hand side. He’s also got to stay tight to Vincent Kompany in defence because Barca will have a lot of the ball.

CB – Vincent Kompany

Kompany has a big role to play as a defender and a leader. He has to keep everyone motivated if Barca start to get on top early.

CB – Martin Demichelis

It would be harsh on Joleon Lescott if Demichelis came back into the side but that’s the way Pellegrini could go. Demichelis needs to do nothing more than create a barrier with Kompany which is difficult for Barca to break through.

LB – Gael Clichy

Clichy should play because of his pace, which will be useful on the counter attack as Barca are likely to have a lot of possession during the game.

RM – Jesus Navas

With James Milner suspended, there's a chance for Navas to play on the right hand side. He's looked good in recent performances and should be determined to put in a good display to show everyone in Spain he made the right choice in moving to City.

CM – Yaya Toure

Toure should be one of the most motivated City stars because of his Barcelona past. He can drop in defensively and he’s come on leaps and bounds as an attacking threat since he left Spain.

CM – Javi Garcia

Garcia provides an extra defensive element to the Manchester City midfield. He can drop right off and protect the defence when Toure is caught up the pitch.

LM – David Silva

Silva provides control from the left hand side and he’ll protect possession well. Expect to see him coming inside when Clichy can get forward to provide width on that side of the team.

ST – Edin Dzeko

Dzeko should see this game as a great opportunity to throw down a claim for a regular starting place at the club. He can roam all along the Barcelona defence.

ST – Alvaro Negredo

Negredo’s job will be to play on top of the Barca defence, looking to press and push them back which will create room for others just in front of the back four. It will also give him a good chance of playing in behind if the Barca defence gets too high.
