Lawrenson - Liverpool have best attack in the league at the moment, is he right?

The former Liverpool defender compared his old side's attack to that of Manchester City and Manchester United.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has hailed the current Liverpool attack as the best in the Premier League in his column for the Daily Mirror.

Lawrenson said: ‘Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling are just sensational. They look as though they can score at any moment.

‘Is there a better attack to watch in the Premier League at the minute? Not for me.’

The Match of the Day pundit said that Liverpool’s attack is ahead of that of both Manchester City and Manchester United in terms of quality.

Lawrenson also singled out Raheem Sterling for some praise, as he has had an impressive spell in the side since being given his chance in December – something which the 19-year-old has grabbed with both hands.

‘Even if Brendan [Rodgers] had brought in Yevhen Konoplyanka from Dnipro. I don’t think he would have got into the side ahead of Sterling, who has improved beyond recognition.

‘Yes, he still has even more learning to do, but his decision-making gets better all the time.

‘He used to just go past people without awareness of what to do in key moments. He is picking that up so rapidly now he can be anything he wants to be in this Liverpool team.’

Liverpool do have the two highest scoring players in the Premier League this season in the form of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge with a combined total of 39 goals. Raheem Sterling is currently averaging a goal just over every four games, whilst Martin Skrtel has a better goals per game ratio and Philippe Coutinho.

Like Liverpool, City have scored plenty of goals this season - two more than the Reds having played a game less in the Premier League. Yaya Toure averages a goal every two games which is a pretty good return from midfield, whilst Sergio Aguero is averaging just below a goal in each game.

Manchester United's firepower has been somewhat limited so far this season. Juan Mata has yet to register his first goal since his move from Chelsea. Robin Van Persie's has provided a decent goal return this season. Though they have talented players, they're expected to provide more goals for the team than they have done so far this season.
