Liverpool fought well at the Emirates but goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski were enough to condemn Brendan Rodgers’ side to a 2-1 defeat and an exit from the FA Cup.
Anticipation was high before the game as Rodgers named a strong side for the match and Liverpool were still riding on the confidence created by their 5-1 demolition of Arsenal last weekend.
However, it wasn’t to be and focus for Rodgers now switches on securing that Champions League qualification place and potentially the Premier League title. Here are our player ratings for Liverpool.
Brad Jones 6/10
Looked a little rusty at times but hasn’t had a great deal of football. Made some decent saves under pressure.
Jon Flanagan 6/10
Podolski really attacked the youngster and at times he struggled with the movement. Got forward well but his final ball was wasteful at times.
Martin Skrtel 6/10
Looked a little lost with Yaya Sanogo drifting onto Daniel Agger. Took immense discipline for Skrtel to resist his urge to fly out of the back four and close down Arsenal’s midfield.
Daniel Agger 6/10
He’ll get better but it was obvious he hasn’t had a great deal of football in recent weeks. Sanogo drifted onto him, playing just in front of the Liverpool defence and Agger got pulled out of position occasionally.
Aly Cissokho 6/10
Pretty much the same as Flanagan, struggled under pressure but did a competent job and could have done better in the final third.
Raheem Sterling 7/10
Sterling was one of Liverpool’s main threats throughout the game. His pace on the counter attack is unreal. Lost his temper a touch when he put his hand on referee Howard Webb.
Joe Allen 6/10
Just couldn’t get into the game. He will definitely have better games of football for Liverpool.
Steven Gerrard 7/10
Grabbed his team by the scruff of the neck when they could have rolled over and watched everything fall apart. Good composure to slot home from the penalty spot.
Philippe Coutinho 6/10
Great touch on the ball but Arsenal pressed him hard whenever he got into a dangerous position. Went searching for the ball a little bit too frequently.
Daniel Sturridge 6/10
Looked a threat at the start of the match but faded thereafter. Could easily have bagged a brace but his finishing was uncharacteristically wasteful.
Luis Suarez 7/10
One of the only players in Liverpool’s team who looked as though he was trying to make things happen. He invites challenges in dangerous areas and he’ll still be trying to work out how Liverpool never won a second penalty.
Jordan Henderson 5/10
Added composure into the middle of the team and gave Liverpool a bit more midfield strength. Covered multiple positions well.
