Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Sterling performance against Arsenal

Raheem Sterling was one of Liverpool's best players in the FA Cup game at Arsenal.

Raheem Sterling was one of Liverpool’s best players despite a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Sterling produced a great display of disciplined, counter attacking football where he covered both right wing and right wing-back positions against the Gunners to show he’s got a lot more than pace.

He timed runs well on the counter attack, careful not to damage the overall shape and balance of the Liverpool midfield and on another day, he could easily have produced an assist or grabbed a goal.

There’s been plenty of talk over the last few days about England boss Roy Hodgson possibly including Sterling in his next England squad and the following World Cup squad for the tournament in Brazil this summer.

For Sterling to be on the plane, he needs to be able to affect big games regularly and although he didn’t get on the score sheet against Arsenal, he gave Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny real problems on that side of Arsenal’s defence.

In fact he was so effective, Arsene Wenger decided to throw on another left-back in the form of Kieran Gibbs to try and keep him quiet and to try and peg him back from advancing forward so rapidly on the counter attack.

When that happened, he didn’t just sit back and concede that his game was over. He looked to switch flanks regularly and looked for different ways to get into the game in order to counter the way Wenger was trying to take out his threat on the right hand side.

It was encouraging to see a young man with so much fire, passion and pace throughout a game when Liverpool head started to drop at 2-0 and when key players started to look a little bit tired after 90 minutes of intense football.
