Brazilian training with United: ‘If it works out that would be great’

Teenage defender Douglas has been speaking about his experiences training with Manchester United.

Brazilian teenager Douglas Garcia has been speaking to Sport Witness about his recent spell at Old Trafford and his hopes for the future.

Douglas is a 16-year-old defender who plays for Desportivo Brasil, the club that honed the skills of another player tipped for a Manchester United move in the form of Bruno Gomes.

Instead – and rather surprisingly given the considerable reports to the contrary – Gomes signed for Internacional. But David Moyes is clearly still looking for the next big thing to come out of Brazil.

The agreement in place between the two clubs allows Douglas to train with the English champions at various times throughout the year, and following his most recent spell in England, he has been speaking about his experiences.

When asked how it felt to have a club like United interested in him, he said, “It’s wonderful for me. It’s a single chance I’ve got.

And of his time in Manchester, Douglas said, “I had contact with everyone during the training and during the meals. They are wonderful people, and they like us more when they know we’re Brazilian. I talked more with Evra, Rafael, and Ferdinand, a very nice guy.”

It is Ferdinand who Douglas says he admires the most from the current crop of United stars. And while he may not get the chance to play alongside him, given the doubts over the former England international’s future, Douglas does harbour hopes of playing for United further down the line; although he is taking nothing for granted.

My goal is the same dream as for everyone else,” he is quoted as saying, “but I’m very calm about that, just like my agents. If it works out it would be great, but I may end up at other clubs as well.”

At just 16, Douglas will just want to improve for now and hope the rest takes cares of itself.
