AC Milan defender Adil Rami wanted Balotelli to celebrate his winner so much that he grappled his face and forced the Italian to smile.
With just a little of five minutes remaining on the clock, hosts AC Milan and relegation-threatened Bologna were heading towards an uninspiring 0-0 draw during Serie A's Friday night match.
Fortunately, up-stepped super Mario.
The former Manchester City striker received the ball a full 35-yards from goal at an angle, and at almost walking pace took a few steps forwards before unleashing an absolute rocket which flew into the far top-left hand corner.
Any player scoring a goal of this beauty – which happened to be the winner – would be forgiven for celebrating in a ballistic manner, yet Balotelli was left emotionless, simply walking away towards the half-way line.
The controversial striker was soon mobbed by his teammates, with central defender Adil Rami forcing the striker to at least smile by grappling his cheeks.
Milan boss Clarence Seedorf confessed after the game that he was unsurprised by Balotelli’s winner, telling Sky Italia that the Italian’s self-belief was behind his effort:
“It’s the kind of goal Mario knows how to score, as he has these weapons in his armoury,”
“The great thing is that the team continues to believe in the result, as you don’t score goals like that unless you believe.”
Balotelli’s future remains in doubt due to Milan’s poor league performances, and there will no doubt be a number of club’s willing to take a gamble on the 23-year-old this summer should Milan need to sell him.
