Anyone who's been dumped on Valentine's Day knows what a gut-wrenching feeling it can be. How, then, does one react to being sacked as the manager of a Premier League club on February 14th ?
Despite some confusion, that's exactly what Rene Meulensteen had to deal with at Fulham Friday, as the Cottagers replaced the Dutchman with Felix Magath after just 17 games at the club.
Fulham, though, did not even mention Meulensteen in their official statement, instead choosing to lavish praise on the reputation of German incumbent Magath.
49-year-old Meulensteen responded by telling BBC Radio 5 Live: 'They have hit the panic button on emotion and fear - but hey ho, that's football. I couldn't care less what they put in the statement, to be honest'.
Manchester United fans, however, have been quick to respond to the news with a series of Tweets in support of the Dutchman - suggesting that Meulensteen should return to Old Trafford and help manager David Moyes get back on track.
Meulensteen's managerial capabilities might be under question - but not his skills as a coach. And that's exactly the capacity in which many United supporters want him back at Old Trafford. It's now up to Moyes (and the Manchester United board) to respond to the wishes of the fans.
Haha, people talking as if Meulensteen is already coming back. He had his chance to stay, said no. It's never gonna happen. Case closed!— GAZZYDOO!! (@Gazzydoo) February 14, 2014
