Cesc Fabregas has admitted that he was shocked that his international compatriot was granted permission to move to Old Trafford.
Much of Manchester United’s transfer attention in the summer was focused on bringing Cesc Fabregas to Old Trafford.
The ex-Arsenal midfielder was seen as a player capable of reinvigorating the side’s creative game, but in the end up the star decided to stay at Barcelona.
Fabregas recently stated that he was flattered by United’s summer interest, and has now said that he is somewhat surprised that Chelsea allowed Mata to leave Stamford Bridge.
"I was surprised to see Juan move there because I think he has been Chelsea's best player over the last two years,” Fabregas is quoted as saying by the BBC.
"He's produced some amazing performances as they won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup and he scored in the final of the European Championship with Spain."
Chelsea’s compliance with the Fifa Financial Fair Play regulations may well have had a role in the west London club’s decision.
Mata is yet to show his best form for the Premier League champions, and has been operating in a wide role.
