Germany have followed in Spain’s footsteps by bringing out their away kit for this summer’s World Cup using colours which don’t correspond with their traditional historic away colours.
The German’s have traditionally used shades of green as their choice of colour for their away kits – which was used as recent as Euro 2012. However, for the World Cup in Brazil the three-time winners will adorn a rugby-style kit – consisting of red and black horizontal stripes.
Joachim Low’s men used a black away kit with a singular red stripe in 2010, yet the horizontal design has never been used in the history of the German national team.
Arsenal have a number of Germans in their ranks which will be hoping to wear the kit at some stage this summer.
One of those players is 29-year-old defender Per Mertesacker. The Gunners’ centre back has already notched up 95 caps for the national team, and he will be hoping for a strong run at the World Cup and possibly reaching his 100th.
Lukas Podolski is another who is hoping to be given a chance to shine this summer. The forward is Germany’s third most capped player with 111 appearances, with an excellent goal haul of 46.
Unfortunately for the Arsenal forward, injuries have hampered his season and his last German cap came against Paraguay in a friendly last August. The 28-year-old fan favourite will be hoping for a late push in the Arsenal starting XI to reclaim the faith shown in him by German staff.
Whilst it’s highly probable that youngster Serge Gnabry won’t be given the chance to adorn Germany’s new away strip, £42.4m record signing Mesut Ozil will barring any dramatic misfortune.
Joachim Low recognises the Gunners’ star’s ability – and he will be vitally important as Germany look to be the first European nation to win the trophy on South American soil.
