Reported by the official Arsenal website, the Gunners’ U21 captain has put pen to paper on a new deal at the Emirates stadium.
The positive news is at least a little bit of a welcome relief for the Gunners as they have endured a tough week on the field.
Arsenal's thrashing at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield was followed up by a tepid 0-0 draw at home to Manchester United – a result which was greeted by jeers at the final whistle due to the lack of attacking presence on display. It has been a few a tough few days for the Gunners, but Hayden’s new contract will lift the mood a little.
The 18-year-old has played in numerous defensive-minded positions for Arsenal’s youth sides, resembling a similarity with Manchester United’s Phil Jones. Predominantly a centre back, Hayden has also featured at right-back and in central midfield.
Arsene Wenger gave the youngster a taste of first-team action during Arsenal’s penalty shootout victory over West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup. Hayden started the game alongside Mikel Arteta in a central midfield position, lasting 83 minutes before being substituted.
Hayden has already notched up valuable experience after participating for Arsenal in the NextGen series, as well as helping the academy side reach the Uefa Youth League knockout stages. Yet, arguably his biggest achievement to date is representing England at youth levels - becoming a regular for the England’s U19 team.
The Arsenal youngster has been described by Wenger as Intelligent, strong and possesses good concentration levels – traits which fans will be hoping to see as Hayden looks to break through into the first-team squad over the next couple of seasons.
