Mourinho linked back to Real Madrid midfielder this summer

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will turn to former club Real Madrid as he looks to boost his midfield options next summer, despite the addition of Nemanja Matic, claim reports.

Reported by Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo, Jose Mourinho has decided to turn to Real Madrid as he attempts to strengthen his midfield for next season.

The midfielder in question is German maestro Sami Khedira – with reports of contact made between the clubs this week.

The Real Madrid midfielder is currently sat out on the side-lines recovering from a knee injury suffered whilst on international duty with Germany. The injury discovered was a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament, unfortunately putting his World Cup hopes into serious doubt.

Jose Mourinho isn’t light on central midfield options, with new signing Nemanja Matic adding to the likes of Jon Obi Mikel, Ramires and Frank Lampard. However, with Lampard’s age and Mikel’s ability often doubted, a defensive-minded midfielder has become a priority for the Portuguese boss.

The Spanish paper go on to mention that Chelsea first made contract with Real Madrid for the former Stuttgart midfielder as early as last summer, yet Carlo Ancelotti rebuffed those rumours by suggesting that Khedira will stay at the Bernabeu.

Following Khedira’s injury, it was first believed that Real Madrid would struggle in his absence. However, Xabi Alonso and Luka Modric have performed excellently, and Angel Di Maria and new signing Illarramendi have also proved capable of filling in a central role.

It is now thought that Los Blancos would be willing to sell Khedira, as Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez – who hasn’t featured many times under Pep Guardiola - has been sounded out in the Spanish press this week as a number one transfer target which could pave the way for the German’s departure.

Jose Mourinho’s was often very praising of Sami Khedira whilst at Real Madrid - and the relationship between the pair could work to the Blues' advantage if they decide to make a formal offer this summer.
