Lazio youngster harassed by claims he's actually 41

SS Lazio fans

Lazio have condemned widespread social media speculation over the age of Cameroonian youth player Joseph Minala.

Lazio have issued a strongly worded statement attacking those who have suggested that 17-year-old Joseph Minala is in fact much older.

Photos of Minala in a Lazio shirt appeared all over the internet with comments implying that he is much older than the club have declared.

After an initial flurry of interest, the story exploded again when website Senego.net satirically reported a false quote from Minala admitting that he turns 42 in August.

With comments raining in from people taking the story seriously and a new series of responses to the original photos, Lazio have taken action.

"With reference to press stories speculating about the age of our player Joseph Minala, we confirm the authenticity of the documents that we registered with the governing body and denounce the countless efforts to throw a sinister light on our club's operations," a statement from Lazio reads.

The player's agent also moved to rubbish the 'quote' that had been published by Senego.

"The lad has never spoken to that website, so I categorically deny this news," Diego Tavano is quoted as saying by Sportmediaset.

"We are weighing up whether to put out an official response to these falsehoods."

Does Minala really look 40?
