Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger continues to show faith to his club record signing Mesut Ozil.
The £42.5 million arrival from Real Madrid started against Manchester United and while he had a solid game, once again he didn’t produce the fireworks which have become synonymous with his name.
There are several possible reasons as to why Ozil has gone off the boil since having a superb first half to the season.
Some have suggested that the fact he’s been used to a winter break has placed greater strain on him physically and mentally.
Ozil played for the Gunners throughout the Christmas and New Year period, when he’s normally used to having a couple of weeks off to recharge his batteries.
Some have suggested that he’s been affected by the greater pace, pressure and physical nature of the Premier League in comparison to La Liga, which is traditionally dominated by Barcelona and Real Madrid.
However, that explanation doesn’t explain why he was so initially effective in Arsenal colours.
Another possible explanation is that sides have worked out how to keep him quiet tactically, which means the emphasis is on the German to reinvent himself and find a way to be effective in big games.
It’s also been suggested that Arsenal’s main striker, Olivier Giroud, doesn’t produce enough movement and trickery in the final third, which Ozil thrives on in terms of being able to setup a striker.
That’s prompted several reports which have suggested possible striker targets for the Gunners this summer, as the club look to invest in a forward who can score plenty of goals and get the best out of Ozil and other players.
Whatever the reason for Ozil’s dip in form, he remains a world class talent and one of the few Gunners in the current squad who can win a match on his own.
Here’s what Arsenal fans made of his performance last night.
I should imagine its a massive struggle for #Ozil after playing balls to a mobile player like Ronaldo then doing it to a player like Giroud— GöönerGössip (@GoonerGossip) February 12, 2014
BT sport saying ozil still off the pace , I thought he was the best player on the park tonight #Ozil— Steven Leahy (@StevenLeahyxX) February 12, 2014
And #Ozil should pray he gets a decent striker in the summer...poor Giroud playing as a lone striker will just give him malignant depression— Brian Ökello (@jakello) February 13, 2014
Ozil comfortably Arsenal's best player thus far.— gunnerblog (@gunnerblog) February 12, 2014
So. It was really disappointed but we have to move forward ! Ozil, Arteta, Koscielny had a very good game ! #ArsenalPositives— TITI (@TKazziha) February 13, 2014
Ozil silenced the 'he's too lazy' brigade yesterday...— Jaybee (@Jayokla) February 13, 2014
You can keep making the same mistakes game after game and expect people not to talk. Ozil, Szczesny were immense last night. #AFC— Öbum Ösigwe (@ObumOsigwe) February 13, 2014
Arsenal has really improved compared to 3/4 seasons ago.Ozil? , wrong buy!. Great player for any team that has the steal in d center.— Akinstee (@kolatoye) February 13, 2014
I don't know what AW has in mind for the FA cup game, but I would certainly give a rest to Ozil as well as Arteta ahead of the big UCL game.— The Positive Gooner (@thepositivedan) February 13, 2014
Ozil created 7 goalscoring chances yesterday . He may be puzzuled y his manager has'nt bought a good striker to score from those chances.— Nishant (@Nish_arsenal) February 13, 2014
Honestly I don't know who I will blame if we end up not winning the EPL cos of d lack of a quality striker upfront.Ozil was superb— Ifeanyi Agbata (@Talktoandrexl) February 13, 2014
