Benfica's Ezequiel Garay is reportedly unkeen on a move to Russian football.
Portuguese website A Bola has run a report suggesting that long term Manchester United target Ezequiel Garay is resisting a move to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
The £21 million rated defender is reportedly being pressed to discuss a move with Zenit before the Russian transfer window closes at the end of this month but it’s not something he appears to be keen on.
“Ezequiel Garay continues to be pressed to accept the proposal that is on the table to transfer to Zenit and Benfica continues to try to resist letting him go until the 27th, when the Russian transfer market ends,” reads the opening of the report on A Bola’s website.
There seem to be two reasons that Garay is reluctant to be forced into any move.
Firstly, his club don’t appear to be keen to sell and rightly so because he’s a top quality centre back and someone who can be an important player for them over the second half of the season.
Secondly, the player is reportedly keen to wait until the summer before considering a move away from the club.
“The player tries to hold at least until the summer,” reads another part of the report.
Maybe he’s got one eye on a potential high profile move to the Premier League with Manchester United or perhaps he’s more focused on not jeopardising his potential place in the Argentina World Cup squad this summer.
Either way, Garay staying put in Portugal beyond February 27 means United still have a chance to get their hands on him as a potential Nemanja Vidic replacement.
