Cristiano Ronaldo became the victim of a violent reaction from one of the Atletico Madrid supporters.
Tempers had flared between the two city-rivals as a result of last week’s Copa Del Rey clash at the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid players Pepe and Alvaro Arbeloa produced bullying tactics towards Chelsea linked striker Diego Costa whereas Brazilian fullback Marcelo became the victim of reported racist chants from a section of the away support.
The tie was practically all but over from the first leg as Real Madrid crushed their rivals 3-0, however a packed out Vicente Calderon still believed a miracle Atleti victory was on.
Any hopes of a fairy-tale comeback however were dashed within the first seven minutes, as a gift allowed Ronaldo to seal Real Madrid’s place in the final from the penalty spot. Any lingering hope completely vanished 15 minutes later – as another Ronaldo spot kick stunned the home crowd.
The incident in question happened as the two sides were walking off the pitch at the half-time interval. Accompanied by Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo was visibly struck by a lighter thrown from the crowd.
The Portuguese winger collapsed to the floor whereas Sergio Ramos’ smiley face quickly turned to horror. Ronaldo received medical attention, and was then escorted off the pitch by medics and extra security.
The reaction to the incident has not looked good on Atletico Madrid, with Iker Casillas saying:
"There is always some lunatic smearing the image of Atletico, it doesn’t represent the quality of the club."
Luckily for Real Madrid, their star man wasn’t seriously hurt and came out for the second half with the rest of the team as Los Blancos comfortably saw out the match to reach the final.
