The former Arsenal star recently caused an outcry in Mexico after refusing the opportunity to line up with El Tri in this summer’s World Cup.
The Mexican Football Federation sent its representatives along with head coach Miguel Herrera to discuss with Carlos Vela a possible return to the national side after a three-year exile – however the invitation was turned down.
Carlos Vela’s motives were suggested as not being 100% ready to return and wishing to consolidate his fabulous form for club side Real Sociedad.
Former Real Madrid goal machine Hugo Sanchez backed Vela, but also lamented his decision as disappointing news for the national team. Now, it appears Sanchez has decided to remind everyone on what they’re missing out on, saying:
"If for whatever reason Messi didn’t want to go to Brazil, for whatever reason, the coach, the presidents, the directors, everyone would have to beg Messi to play with his national team,"
"For us Carlos Vela is like Messi of Argentina and he is like the Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal. At that magnitude we can’t afford to be without the best player in the national team – one who is currently at a world class level."
The former Arsenal star – who signed for Real Sociedad for as little as £4m – has been in terrific form this season, contributing to 17 goals with goals and assists in 20 La Liga starts.
Vela’s form has questioned Arsene Wenger’s decision to allow him to leave for such a cheap price, and more so at such a young age with so much potential.
Hugo Sanchez reiterated his belief that Vela could be Mexico’s superstar this summer, and has left the federation subtle hints to do whatever it takes to get him back.
He continued: "There are players who have to be given some preferential treatment, not everyone is the same, some are figures, others are not so much and don’t even need seeing, a telephone call will do (hinting at Vela).”
"Decisions and procedures have not been done well lately. This is manageable, yet nobody came out winning.”
