Mexican star Carlos Vela has proven to be a brilliant crosser this season at Real Sociedad.
Former Arsenal star Carlos Vela has made quite an impression this season at Real Sociedad.
The Basque Country side have used Carlos Vela and Paris Saint Germanin target Antoine Griezmann to great effect this season, playing on either flank supporting striker Imanol Agirretxe.
The trio have scored 28 La Liga goals between them – more than 65% of the squad’s total.
What is perhaps more surprising is the number of goals scored directly from crosses. Real Sociedad’s 12 goals from crosses so far this season is the highest number throughout Europe’s top five leagues – take note David Moyes!
On the contrary, Manchester United’s performance against Fulham would suggest that their crossing ability could do with some practice. The Red Devils notched up a record 81 crosses, yet only a measly 18 found its intended target.
If Manchester United want to go down that route, then there aren’t many better wide forwards in the world right now than Carlos Vela.
The coveted Mexican has contributed to 17 La Liga goals this season. The former Gunner has eight assists, and has played a total of 53 key passes. However, it’s his crossing which stands out, completing 25 from a possible 52 – just under 50%.
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney on the other hand is United’s best, yet has only made 43 key passes and has completed 27 of a possible 141 crosses – approximately 19%.
It remains to be seen whether David Moyes will decide to change tactics following the failed plan against Fulham, however if he does persevere, then a shock transfer bid for Arsenal reject Carlos Vela should be considered a serious option next summer.
