Fans of the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City will have grown used to the reports revealing that their scouts were here-there-and-everywhere in January. But just because the transfer window has closed, that does not mean those members of staff have now got their feet up.
United’s scouts in particular have seemingly spent more time in Portugal than anywhere else in recent months, and they were there again on Tuesday evening to watch Benfica win 2-0 against Sporting Lisbon in a vital top-of-the-table clash.
It is likely the usual suspects were being watched – the likes of Ezequiel Garay, Nicolas Gaitan and Lazar Markovic – but following the departure of Nemanja Matic to Chelsea, Benfica’s Enzo Perez stepped up and put in an impressive performance.
Whoever United’s scouts were there to see, they were joined with the great and the good of Europe, with a list revealing that staff from City, Liverpool and Everton were also in attendance from England, along with Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco and Juventus to name a few.
With William Carvalho not available, he was one player those in attendance were not keeping a close eye on for once. But Portugal may never have been more popular given the number of top quality players currently and recently plying their trade in the Premeira Liga.
How many of those on show last night will arrive in the Premier League remains to be seen.
