Proof! Aaron Ramsey brings out the best in Mesut Ozil

Ozil V Cardiff

Arsenal play-maker Mesut Ozil has not been enjoying the best form recently, but is that because of the absence of teammate Aaron Ramsey?

Much has been written about the current form of Mesut Ozil. After another disappointing performance and an early substitution against Liverpool, questions were asked over his ability to perform against the big clubs. While some fans even called for him to be dropped for this evening's match against Manchester United.

Arsene Wenger has already sprung to the defence of the German international, calling him a phenomenal player.  But is the reason for his sudden drop in form not so much anything he has done, but a result of the prolonged absence of a man who looked like being Arsenal's player of the season until a thigh injury ruled him out for around six weeks.

Aaron Ramsey was a revelation for the Gunners until that setback, but was he also the player that brought out the best in Ozil?

Below is how the former Real Madrid player performed when he played alongside Ramsey  He averaged 0.27 goals a game, 0.47 assists per game, and perhaps most impressively made an average of three key passes per match.

Mesut Özil 0.27 0.47 3.00 1.33 54.67

However, in the games Ozil has played since Ramsey's injury, he has not scored a single goal, has seen his goal assist average more than halve, has had far fewer scoring attempts and has also seen a dip in his key passes.

The German has however played more accurate passes in the former Cardiff player's absence, suggesting his role has altered in recent weeks.

With Ramsey running in behind, playing fast one-twos with Ozil and acting before the opposition defence had time to react, the club-record signing appeared to be the final piece of Wenger's jigsaw.  But now a mixture of fatigue and the absence of Ramsey have left him looking a little short.

When the Welshman returns, giving Ozil the chance to benefit from the swift movement his skill-set thrives off, then Arsenal fans may well see the player who had them purring at the start of the campaign.
